In 2012, the Richmond Food Security Society (RFSS) conducted a research project that would identify lands available in Richmond for food production activities (e.g. community farms, gardens, schoolyard gardens, pocket markets, small to medium scale farms, etc…).

RFSS has identified over 638 properties that could be used for a variety of food activities.
In addition, RFSS interviewed a diversity of key experts (e.g. farmers, academics, school district reps) to determine how to improve land access and land availability in Richmond for farmers and other food production activities.
