Project

Farm Name
Skenoo Community Growers
Farm Project Description

I have a background in architecture and construction, small business, and project management. Therefore, an ideal situation would be on a plot of land with no zoning regulations with the intention to establish a self-sustaining community built on a foundation of sound planning and farm management principles including sustainable land-use, food production, water and waste management, and energy independence. Given that the goals I have set out could easily span 20 or more years, I am willing to begin with more modest ambitions. I'm prepared to begin with just a few acres of arable land; to establish a garden, harvest and preserve food for the winter, sell a surplus to available community markets, and use the off-season to plan the growth and expansion of the enterprise the following season. I'm also prepared to work with the owners to remediate existing land, adapt to and modify existing soil conditions over time, and manage the geomorphology (reshape the terrain) as required over time.

Land & Features Desired

Total Land Size (acres)
5-150+
Wooded Area (acres)
Yes - Would be nice to have access for hunting
Cultivable Area (acres)
I'm interested in starting with low-till, by hand, so even a few acres would be enough to start.
Possibility to expand area currently available (acres)
Yes - If I find a suitable plot of land, then the potential to expand and grow within permaculture guidelines would be preferable.
Zoning
Preferred current state of the surface of the cultivable area

Ideally, a plot of land that is either fallow, or been previously established for agricultural yields. I am aiming for a permaculture approach to food production and land restoration.

Open to landowner residing on property
Yes - I would welcome this, since they are likely the best resource at hand if they have a vision for the property and can become a willing partner to advocate and promote investment in their land.
Need farm buildings
Yes
Need fenced land
Yes
Need farm machinery and tools
Yes
Need established water source and infrastructure
To begin, a waterline for the produce garden would a minimum.
Need on-site housing
Yes

Soil needs
I currently live in the Kootenay Boundary region where the soils are suitable for grazing, and hay grass production. I'd like to be in an area with good drainage, a longer growing season, and good water access. I'm happy to share a longer list of criteria, but I believe each parcel should be evaluated on it's own merits.
Will acquire commercial insurance
Yes - yes, potentially - depending on the cost.
