Farm management (3 years+) - I have worked in the orchard business for 25 years, started on the family farm in Oliver B.C. was responsible for packing, marketing, delivery too retail stores such as safeway, coopers, quality green, shoppers wholesale all the way north to Prince George B.C.. In 2003 I bought my own orchard in Oliver. I have managed my own farm along with renting my fathers orchard, working hands on with my wife and hired help on daily activities that take place on the orchard. I try to attend most of the tree fruit horticulture show/talks that take place in the Okanagan and Washington. I believe it is important to be updated on the new practices in agriculture, new technology, equipment, and seeing different farming practices. Like anything else agriculture is a life long learning experience.
Do you have a business plan?
Yes - As mentioned before i bought my orchard in 2003, in 2019 i bought an orchard in Summerland with my brother and in spring of 2020 we replaced the orchard with an vineyard. The past few years i've been learning about vineyard business aspects and the Viticulture aspect. I'd like to acquire more land to plant a vineyard. I have the knowledge of the cost of planting per acre and the cost of farming per acre on yearly basis. With vineyards you can get a contract with Wineries for up to 10 year increments, these wineries help you decided which varities to plant according to your location, soil texture, and demand, also help with viticulture practices.
Do you have financial resources available to start your farm?
Yes - Financial resources i work with FCC bank have a good relationship with them and have talked to them about expanding my farming. As mentioned first orchard bought in 2003 got married in 2004 have two boys 14 and 5 years old. Me and my wife both farm and we did not expand our farming from 2003 to 2019 because we were busy with the kids, now that kids are older, with the oldest even helping on the farm we are ready to take on more farming. This wait for 16 years also helped us pay off debt and save money.
Do you have access to other financial resources (such as a financial partner, loan, etc.) to start your farm?'
