    Farm Project Description

My husband and I are looking for what we classify as the simple life. For over 15 years we have been working and living in downtown Victoria and are looking for a change of pace. We don’t have children; just a handsome 6 year old black lab named Rocco. The simple life to us is putting our mind, body and souls into working with the land in a regenerative, organic fashion to produce nutrient dense food/food products and live a good quiet life away from the city. Dave will be enrolling the Pacific Rim College this spring for their Permaculture Design and Resilient Ecosystems Diploma. He plans to take what he learns in this course and apply it to the property. Part of a resilient ecosystem is diversity, we’re interested in growing: vegetables, fruit and nut trees and organically grow into raising livestock such as laying hens, bees, and goats or sheep. My husband has had a passion for some time now regarding bees. He believes there is a simple and natural way to raise bees; that unlike traditional bee keeping leaves the hives mostly undisturbed for the year. Less interference with the bees makes them happier and less aggressive and helps to promote a healthy strong hive. Building hives and keeping bees will be a valuable service, which will benefit a large surrounding area with the helpful pollinators. Natural beekeeping will be one of our main focal points. We would also want to raise laying hens in a rotational grazing method, (developed by Joel Salatin) if pastures are available. This provides a variety of vegetation for the chickens as well as fertilizer and clearing the pasture of weed seeds and insects. We believe: in no till gardening, no use of chemicals of any kind and diversity in plant life, along with animal integration to create a balanced ecosystem with healthy soil. Although we are not farmers, we are entrepreneurs at heart. Our first business together was a comedy club franchise in Victoria. Sadly it didn’t last very long, but we have learned from those past trials and mistakes. Lessons we look to grow from and apply to our dream in achieving the simple life. We hope to grow with you. Cheers, Dave & Yona
