This 20-acre property sits in a picturesque little neighbourhood facing west, just above the BX Ranchlands of Vernon, BC. There are various opportunities around the property, depending on what a farmer might like to do! The biggest opportunity is a roughly 6 acre lot that is currently planted to apples. This orchard has seen its best days, and the landholders will be removing the orchard in the near future. They would be happy for a new farmer to interplant something else here, as they slowly remove the old orchard. The landholders would also consider a vineyard in this area. There are two other pastures of an acre or so each, that are currently not being used and could be good opportunities for a market garden or flowers. The landholders would be happy to explore offering add-on services to their current apple customer base, by including additional veggies or flowers, perhaps in CSA style (which the farmer could spearhead). Finally, there is a new orchard around 5 acres in size that the landholders have recently planted. They are open to to exploring a co-planting strategy in this newer orchard with an incoming farmer.
The landholders operate a successful orchard business and pilates studio from the property, and have several acres of land which they are looking to lease. The farmland on the property has been certified organic for the last three years, and the landholders have undertaken an immense amount of work for the last 6-7 years to rebuild the soil and achieve certification. Organic agriculture is very important on this beautiful, active property.
The current landholders are interested in permaculture and regenerative practices, and would love to collaborate with farmers who would share those visions. At this time, the landholders are not interested in meat bird or other livestock operations. They would like to work cooperatively with young farmers and to give new starters a chance to succeed. They are not available for daily mentorship at this time, but looking instead to collaborate as they are able and watch new farmers grow.
