Farm Name
Fern + Roe Hide Tanning
Farm Project Description

Hello! We are Mara and Mark Santamaria-Cur, we are located in Central Saanich. We run a natural micro hide tannery on the island and specialize in local fibreshed textiles education. We are looking for pasture land to raise a flock of sheep. We do not currently own a flock, we’d be starting this flock from scratch, with experience in animal husbandry. Our ideal land match is a farm looking ahead to succession planning, whose farmers want a new generation to buy in and take over production. Between the two of us we have experience in food growing, animal raising, certified arborism, construction, and degrees in Environmental Studies, Urban Forestry, Plant Sciences, and Environmental Policy and Communications. Our main joint venture at this time is Fern + Roe, our business in which we teach people how to create natural leathers and rugs mainly from island sheep farms. We’d love to raise our own flock, starting as soon as we connect with a pasture/farm. Longer term, we’d like to buy into a farm that is seeking partners or the next-generation of land tenders, and we are ready to do so. We have a strong community on southern Vancouver Island and would prefer to stay on island, but feel free to reach out if we sound like a good fit if you’re in southern BC as well. Thank you for reading!
