State of the surface of the cultivable area

Our farm is predominantly sandy loam with rocky ridges and less rocky low lying areas. All cleared areas have mixed perennial cover. We have recently chosen to develop a low lying area for annual vegetable production and are currently working on water drainage earthworks to lengthen its accessible growing season and we are observing our new little field for its first wet season since it has been cleared. There are high winter water tables throughout the farm.

Description and historical use of land available for farming

We purchased this land in 2017 and it had just been clearcut. The forest was very mature with many trees over 200 years old.

Road Access
Yes - Our farm has road access to all fields. The road access to the new lease field is still grass but even now in winter it is firm and dry.

Yes - Our farm has electricity. There is currently no power to the new lease field.

Long-term goal or vision for land

Diversified crops under production with different farmers. Initially we'd like to welcome annual vegetable growers to diversify the foods available from the farm. We are open to expanding to other growers as well (livestock, flowers, nursery, grain....). We practice regenerative practices including no-till, biological amendments, cover cropping, diversity... We want lease farmers to have the same regenerative farming practices.

Soil details
  • Texture - Lease field: fine sandy loam with good organic matter (our fields have between 9-12.6% OM)
  • Rocky soil - Established forage areas are rocky. New field much less so!!!
  • Sloping - New field slopes gently to the north. It has full southern exposure.
  • Slope orientation and degree of slope (specify) - New field slopes gently to the north. It has full southern exposure.
  • General fertility (nutrients) - I have not done any soil testing on the new field. The biological health of our perennial crop fields are slowly recovering from the trauma of clearcutting and clearing. We have only used compost and liquid compost amendments on this land.
  • Soil grittiness - Lots of sand across the farm. The new lease field's sand component is fine.
