We are looking for a Farm Hand to join our team this season. Work hours are Monday to Friday, 9am to 4:30pm, with some flexibility on scheduling. Start date is ASAP, with a minimum contract to the end of August, and a possibility to extend to end of October.
This role is a great opportunity to make a strong impact on our farm’s story, and our community’s local food security. We are looking for someone who shares our passion for growing food, and loves being outdoors in all weather. Previous farming or landscaping experience is an asset, but a great attitude and a desire to learn with us are what maters most.
About us:
Looking over the Sechelt Inlet on the Sunshine Coast of BC, Heart & Sol Coastal Farm is a place to be inspired. We are a small-scale farm, operating on 5 acres on this un-ceded territory of the Shíshálh Nation also known as Sechelt. We farm using regenerative agriculture and permaculture principles, and we don’t use chemical pesticides or herbicides in our garden. Our vision to create a beautiful space that inspires a connection with nature. Our mission is to get healthy, local, and delicious food in as many households as possible.
We grow produce and microgreens, raise happy hens and ducks for eggs, and raise a small flock of sheep. We also have a full commercial kitchen onsite where we make small batch artisanal products. We sell our products directly from our farm, through a local community CSA, the farmers’ market, restaurants and stores. We also host a popular kids farm camp, workshops, and events.
Tasks:
• Garden bed preparation, propagation, seeding, weeding, planting, harvesting, packing, and general landscaping
• Animal care
• Quality Control
• Help establish and document farm processes
• Operate farm equipment and machinery
Training:
• Comprehensive on-the-job training
• First Aid certification
• FoodSafe certification
Desired Skills & Qualities:
• Reliable & self-motivated, with a great work ethic and the desire to work outside in all weather
• Ability to work alongside a small team in a supportive and efficient manner, and to work both independently and as part of the team as required
• You enjoy being around kids, and take pride in showing them what you do
• Strong communication & problem-solving skills
• Ability to complete physically demanding and repetitive tasks, including lifting up to 40 lbs safely and efficiently
• Previous farm or landscaping experience, as well as experience operating farm tools such as a tractor or BCS, is an asset
