Horn & Harvest is a proposed regenerative small-scale farm with a diverse and flexible approach to chosen crops and livestock that would scale to the land and resources available. I imagine a very high rotation space efficient mixture of small livestock, cut flowers, spring seedlings, perennial garden plants and a few select food crops each year. Using a mixture of regenerative, permaculture and traditional methods to maintain a closed cycle would reduce the need for off-farm resources. Livestock would begin with a flock of heritage breed laying hens, marketable crops would be chosen by location, soil quality and lease length. Ideally, low maintenance perennial crops (rhubarb, lavender, herbs, florals) accented by high rotation "square foot" style gardens that would include inter-planting and nitrogen-smart crop choices. Expansion could include a small herd of 15 - 20 boer goats for brush management and pasture rotation with potential for them to be "rented" locally to do brush management off-farm, reducing feed costs and some modest additional income. I am at the beginning of my journey and still developing my ideas in a form that is financially realistic and sustainable! I'm am flexible on arrangements and am very good at working with what I have available. Location wise, for now, I am hoping to stay adjacent to Victoria, with easy access to the peninsula, Saanich and downtown. I am preparing myself to eventually leave the CRD for the right opportunity, but I am not looking to do that quite yet. I currently live downtown and would hope for a location with a housing options, but I'm flexible as to what that could look like.
Very flexible. My focus is not specifically on a high volume of market vegetables but a rotation of pastured animals, hoophouses and potentially perennial crops that can tolerate much different conditions than seedling vegetables. Open and amended land would be utilized immediately for annual crops regardless.
