State of the surface of the cultivable area
The largest area is currently laying fallow. It is partly under a large tarp to kill the weeds. The other two gardens are well established, weeded, and have drip irrigation. The orchard is beginning to bear fruits.
Description and historical use of land available for farming
This property was once part of Nanaimo's (Harewood) "Five Acres", land set aside so that the coal minors and their families could sustain themselves while the mines were closing down. The property gently slopes toward the south. The garden areas are fenced (some repair is needed on the big garden). There is water available to each plot. Tools are nearby in the tool shed. It has a rural feel but is not far from downtown Nanaimo and the university.
