Description and historical use of land available for farming

Nestled in the heart of South Terrace, this 1 acre property at 5112 Medeek Avenue is a true neighborhood gem with deep roots in local history. Medeek (midiik), is the Tsimshian word for grizzly bear. This name honors Walter George Wright, a hereditary Tsimshian chief and Skeena River boat pilot who belonged to a branch of the Gispwudwada clan that claimed the grizzly bear as their crest. This Southside neighborhood was established on the site of productive pre-World War II farms. Miss Val is a wannabe farmer from the far Northern area of Fort St. John. She bought the land dreaming of urban food production, after she learned that 69% of local homes in Terrace have fruit trees and 29% maintain large gardens.

Long-term goal or vision for land

Val hopes to honor the rich history by transforming the property into a community or urban garden, directly contributing to local food security. This vision aligns with the recent City of Terrace’s official goals to promote abundant local food systems and support "edible landscaping" and community garden spaces in underserved areas. By turning this land back into a productive garden, Val is helping to revitalize the agricultural potential that has defined Medeek Avenue for generations.
