Project

Farm Name
Henry's Farm
Farm Project Description

My ultimate goal is a thriving, healthy, diversified farm. As a farmer, I want a farm that feels like a home I can be proud of, and which reflects the love and effort I will put into it. I will know I have been successful through healthy living soil, thriving plants, and happy animals. I am ultimately quite flexible in the character of my farm. I believe it makes much more sense to adapt my business plan to what best fits the land and landholder, than to try and force one specific business model or production type. I have experience and passion for a wide range of agricultural pursuits, including hay, berries, grain, vegetables, sheep, cattle, horses and poultry. I also have a passion for trees, sustainable forestry, and sawmilling. I am open to incorporating any of these elements to a farm, depending on what makes sense. Ideally, I would like a diversified farm which supports both crops and livestock. Despite my wide interest and flexibility, I hope a landholder can understand my two non-negotiables. I want to live on the farm, and I will not farm in a way which degrades or harms the land, wider environment, farm culture or eaters.

Land & Features Desired

Total Land Size (acres)
Minimum 5 (Ideally, smaller certainly considered)
Wooded Area (acres)
Yes - I am passionate about incorporating healthy woodland on the farm
Cultivable Area (acres)
Ideally some, but I would be interested in pasture, marginal or treed land as well.
Possibility to expand area currently available (acres)
Yes - Marginal land, pasture land, or land needing thinned/cleared welcome.
Zoning
Either
Preferred current state of the surface of the cultivable area

From ready to plant loam to an overgrown weedpatch. I am happy to start from scratch or build on the work of farmers before me.

Open to landowner residing on property
Yes - I value community immensely, and a close relationship with my neighbours is a very high priority, especially if a neighbour is also the landowner.
Need farm buildings
No
Need fenced land
No
Need farm machinery and tools
No
Need established water source and infrastructure
Irrigation would be nice, but I have extensive experience dryland farming.
Need on-site housing
Yes - Nothing needs to be in place, just a willingness for me to live on farm. I would be happy to build a tiny home or bring atrailer.
Production type
  • Vegetable - I would very much want a household garden, and I would potentially be interested in specific cash crops (sunflowers, garlic)
  • Livestock - Cattle - I would love to raise dexters, devons, shorthorns or herefords, though I would prefer to diversify into cattle than as a primary income source initially.
  • Livestock - Sheep - I am very commited to the Cotswold Breed, and foresee a market for meat, and wool among the Victoria fibre arts community
  • Poultry - Layers - No farm is complete without some chickens, though this is not an important part of my business model
  • Grain - Quite central to my business plan. I am very keen to grow organic grain, especially oats, barley, and wheat.
  • Seed - I am interested in the niche seed markets of both heritage grain varieties and native grasses and forbs.
  • Hay & Forage - I don't foresee this being a major buissness component, but I am open to this as it could certainly make sense for some situations
  • Orchard/Fruit - I would be interested in Saskatoons and Raspberries as a smaller aspect of the farm to diversify into over time
  • Bees - I have never kept bees, but I would like to learn. I see this as a supplemental option for the farm
