Wild Coast Mushrooms is a new specialty mushroom farm being established on Vancouver Island. Our goal is to build a small, efficient farm producing high-quality fresh mushrooms for restaurants, farmers markets, and other local customers in the surrounding communities. The farm will initially focus on five specialty species: blue oyster, lion’s mane, shiitake, maitake, and king oyster mushrooms. Production will begin at approximately 50–100 lb per week, with the goal of increasing to approximately 200–300 lb per week as our customer base develops. Wild Coast Mushrooms is owned and operated by two experienced mushroom growers with several years of commercial cultivation experience. Between us, we have experience growing approximately 15 species of gourmet and medicinal mushrooms, developing and managing mushroom production systems, and selling fresh mushrooms directly to restaurants and at farmers markets. We are looking for a long-term location where we can establish our production facility and grow the business gradually. Ideally, the property would have an existing building suitable for conversion to mushroom production, although we are also open to establishing a modular facility using shipping containers or similar structures. Access to water and electricity is essential. Our longer-term goal is to develop Wild Coast Mushrooms into a financially sustainable Vancouver Island farm that supplies locally grown specialty mushrooms year-round. We also plan to improve the environmental efficiency of mushroom production through cold substrate treatment, reusable growing systems, and productive uses for spent mushroom substrate. Initially, spent substrate can be made available to the host farm or landowner for use as a soil amendment, creating an opportunity for our mushroom operation to complement existing agricultural production on the property.
We are flexible regarding the current state of the cultivatable area, as our primary farming activity will be indoor specialty mushroom production rather than field cultivation. Cleared or previously cultivated land would be suitable, but established pasture or other agricultural land could also work well. We do not require high-quality cropping soil and would prefer to minimize disturbance to productive farmland. Our main requirements are a suitable area for an existing building or small modular production facility, reliable access to water and electricity, and year-round vehicle access. If the property has cultivatable land, spent mushroom substrate could potentially be incorporated into the farm's existing soil management or composting practices.
