Fields of Opportunity

Fields of Opportunity: Canada’s Path to Sustainable Prosperity is a position paper authored by Francis Hall that explores how hemp can help Canada transition from extractive logging practices to a regenerative, community-centered economy. Using Honeymoon Bay, BC, as a case study, it highlights the decline of forestry jobs, the environmental costs of industrial clear-cutting, and the imbalance between corporate profit and local well-being. The paper proposes building a domestic hemp manufacturing sector—using unused farmland and citizen-led cultivation—to create jobs, strengthen rural economies, and support Canada’s climate goals. It calls for investment in processing infrastructure, deregulation of hemp, and Indigenous leadership in land stewardship, presenting hemp as a practical, scalable alternative that can deliver both prosperity and ecological resilience
